Addressing the needs of underserved communities

Stop the Spread facilitated hyperlocal pandemic response projects for the hardest hit neighborhoods and communities. We bridged the gap between large-scale COVID-19 responses and local community needs. With a network of over 350 innovative partners that have been vetted and curated we facilitated bringing a tailored COVID-19 solution toolkit that accelerated and augmented response efforts already underway.

A hyperlocal response to COVID-19: a critical need

COVID-19 has had a disproportionate impact on underserved communities, with these communities experiencing inequitable health and economic outcomes. Increased presence of chronic health conditions, higher percentage of essential workers, housing instability, food insecurity, lack of paid medical leave and fear of being a 'public charge' are examples of why providing access to COVID-19 response resources alone was not enough to stop the spread.

Stop the Spread recognizes that a one-size fits all response does not address underlying drivers of structural inequity and systemic racism. To address these disparities, Stop the Spread supported individual communities and neighborhoods that experienced critical gaps in their COVID-19 response by working through community partners to identify unmet needs and deploy resources.

Our Approach

A sufficient response to COVID-19 is one that worked to suppress the spread of the virus, facilitated connections to mental and physical health care and ensured that individuals and families were able to meet basic needs. For many underserved communities the overall response had been insufficient. Stop the Spread worked with local community leaders to address gaps in response. We facilitated partnerships that could bring direct COVID-19 resources, digital health tools and support for basic needs through a hyperlocal approach.

Examples of what we can bring to communities

We built a custom toolkit of solutions by partnering with community leaders to understand neighborhood needs and leveraging a robust network of over 350 vetted partners. Toolkits include novel COVID-19 response solutions that include education, PPE, screening, testing and therapeutics to increase access or bolster local efforts underway. To address the mental and physical health impact of COVID-19, Stop the Spread brought in digital health partners that provided communication platforms, remote monitoring and virtual care services. Lastly, recognizing that the ability to address basic needs is essential to any emergency response, our toolkit includes direct services and referral platforms that can address financial security, housing, child care, transportation, food access, legal aid and other social service supports.

Columbia University: Scaling Precise Viral Load Testing

Precise viral load testing allows for measurement of the levels of the virus and the stage of the illness. These measurements are critical for clinical tests of COVID-19 treatments like plasma therapy. Columbia University is currently producing 200 tests per day for Johns Hopkins University to conduct clinical tests, but require additional funding to scale. Stop the Spread is working to facilitate philanthropic funding to support the rapid scaling of these tests.
